Both anime involves mecha suits for fighting and battles. Both anime has a weak yet developing MC. Both anime is very alike with each other (characters and setting).
One might argue Shinmai has more plot and story development, but the sequal of HxH (if we ever get one) might make up for it. Shinmai is set in a similar world as the present, with the addition of demons and fictional races, whereas HxH is more of a futuristic mecha. Another difference is of course the setting. His potential is occasionally shown and foreshadowed, but he is mostly displayed as a catalyst for the female cast.
